Crafty Design Ideas: Wedding Scrapbook

In honor of our anniversary, I put the finishing touches on our wedding scrapbook album this past weekend! Jeff and I were married two yrs ago on the Oregon coast and it was a magical day.  ♥

My vision for our album was to combine elements in nature with a touch of elegance and romance. Since we were married at the ocean, I used a combination of sheer and embossed wedding papers, shell and sand papers, hand-cut flourishes, stamps and embellishments.

I chose ocean blue as our wedding color along with a spiral motif to symbolize eternity...

I arranged the book chronologically, and created a unique border for the page spread in each section.
Thanks to the lovely Sarah McAllister Photography, we have so many gorgeous photos from our special day. On each page, I combined three to four photos in collage style.

Of course, I had to make my dress! I based the design on Simplicity 1909...

To create scalloped edges on many of the page elements, I used a variety of Fiskars paper edgers. Love these scissors. I've had them a long time and I use them for everything!

For the ceremony pages, I used the ocean paper with rhinestone spirals and hearts. I printed a verse from our ceremony for each page in this section which we wrote together...

I chose Jolee's Boutique sticker embellishments (bells, birds and flowers) as accents throughout the album.

And the trim around the photos are hand-stamped flourish motifs accented with Holbein silver glitter paint at the points. The bottle has a super-fine tip, and their paint is saturated with glitter which is nice for fine detail.

Photo corners and flourishes were made with a stamp set using Brilliance Dew Drops silver ink pad to create an old-fashioned look.

Added sheer ribbon edging on a few photos for a romantic effect...

As long as I can remember, I've had a passion for printed papers. So much that I even saved a wide assortment of stationery and cards from my childhood. This cute pastel heart letter set circa 1982 inspired me to create the retro 80's collection. Isn't it charming? I think I wrote letters to my grandma on this stationery :)

These days I still love making and sending cards. Some of my favorite tools are Molotow paint markers, Lyra colored pencils and Sharpie paint pens. All three of these have amazingly rich and permanent color.  Looking for a pop of color on a card or poster? The Sharpie neons are fun too.
Glue dots are an easy, no mess way to adhere tiny bits of paper or fabrics.

Sewers, here's a fun project to use up extra fabric. Embellish kitchen towels! Valentine's fabric makes a sweet gift, but try any type of cotton calico as well. Wouldn't this edging be cute with modern geometrics or vintage kitchen prints too?

Purchase a high quality kitchen towel, and cut a 9" strip of fabric that is one inch longer than the length of the towel. Press the edges under 1/4" on all sides, and then over another 1/4" so that the raw edge is hidden. Stitch the hem down near the top edge (this is called double-turn hemming). If you have a rolled hem foot for your machine, you can turn and sew the hem in one step.

Next, prepare the heart applique. Cut out a 5" paper heart template- fold a paper square in half and cut a half heart along the edge. Trace the heart onto your fabric and place it right sides together with another square of the same fabric. Sew all the way around the edges of the heart using a 1/4" seam. Trim off the excess fabric, and clip the curves. Cut a slit in the back of the sewn heart to turn it right side out and press. Machine applique the heart to the center of the edging strip using matching thread and a scant 1/8" seam. Optional: Zig-zag stitch the edge also.

Finally, sew the edging on the towel: Place the fabric edging strip with the right side face down on the towel  5" up from the bottom edge. Pin and sew the top edge to the towel. Turn the edging right side down and press.

Winter Garden- Dew Drops, Art Prints

It's been a warm winter here, almost like spring some days! Nonetheless, I'm still embracing the slow energy of winter- planning new business ideas and planting new seeds.

Japanese Maple, winter

Our winter rain in the Northwest brings lots of morning dew, and plants literally shimmer with a crystalline glow. Above is the Japanese Maple in our front yard on a misty, rainy day. Isn't it stunning? This gorgeous dew is the inspiration behind my Dew Drops pattern collection! This collection of 10 patterns (each print sized 8x10) is available as a printable design download in the RPS shop. Use these designs for paper crafts such as scrapbooks, cards or invites (Note: the design download is for personal use only. Licensing inquiries are welcome.)

This collection is perfect for winter/early spring cards, new baby announcements or scrapbooks,  garden notebooks or whatever you envision :) Try folding a sheet in half and using it as stationery (write on the blank side). Note: I enlarged the size on some of the prints shown here up to 120% using a color copier.

Behind the scenes, making Dew Drops in Adobe Illustrator... it's so fun to play with different colorways and layer pattern designs. Typically, I come up with several options and then narrow it down to shades of two or three colors.
